What are UST's?

What are UST’s?

“UST’s” are underground storage tanks. In the Hampden County Area UST's are mostly used for the storage of oil. The problem with these oil storage tanks is that they can leak.  Over time the leaking oil can creat eserious health hazards and cost a great deal of money to remediate.

If you are viewing a home and you notice tha there is an oil intake pipe that leads into the home and there is no oil tank in the basement, then there is a good possibility that there is or was an underground oil tank on the premises. If there is a UST you should require trhat it is removed prior to purchasing the home.

The UST removal process generally requires removal supervised by the fire department, transportation of the tank to a licensed storage facility and examination at the facility for signs of leakage. See M.G.L. c. 148 sec 38A and 527 C.M.R. sec 9.00 for more detailed information.
